The World Association of education Science (AMSE) is inviting professionals in Education, Researchers, Academics, Directors, Technical teams and educational authorities in general, to attend the XVI Congress of the World Association of Science Education “Cultural identities in the context of globalization: The emergence of new players in education” focused on the analysis and reflection on educational issues that will take place in Monterrey, Mexico, May 31st to June 4th, 2010. It will generate innovative proposals in the framework of cultural identity and globalization.

2010 FREEMAN INSTITUTE FOR INFUSING JAPAN
STUDIES INTO THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM
HONOLULU, HAWAII, MAY 23 – JUNE 11, 2010

The Japan Studies Association, with a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation, will conduct a three-week intensive workshop on Japan for faculty and administrators from two and four-year colleges and universities. The workshop is for individuals who have little or no prior academic background on Japan and who wish to begin incorporating Japan Studies into their courses.

The program is open to faculty in the humanities, social sciences, business or education. Administrators and librarians are also eligible to apply.

The workshop will cover a wide variety of topics relating to Japan, including history, politics, literature, business, and the arts. Its primary purpose is to introduce faculty/ administrators into all aspects of Japanese society so that they can return to their institutions and begin incorporating Japan Studies into their courses.  It will have multiple instructors, primarily drawn from the University of Hawaii, but also including noted scholars from other universities.

The workshop will be held at Tokai University in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tokai is located about a ten- minute walk from Waikiki. Participants will be expected to arrive at Tokai on Sunday, May 23rd by 6:00 PM for opening ceremonies. The obligatory closing banquet is Friday evening, June 11th 2010. One must check out of Tokai on Saturday, June 12th, unless other arrangements are made with the Tokai staff. Due to the intensive nature of the program, participants are not allowed to bring spouses, domestic partners nor dependents.

There will be only 20 participants selected for the Freeman Fellowships. Each participant will receive up to $600 to cover roundtrip airfare to Hawaii. Single rooms, some meals and a stipend will be provided.  Each college or university is required to pay a $600 Program Fee for its participant. This fee must be paid by May 1st.

Completed applications are due by February 1st. Successful candidates will be notified by February 15th.

Lyon Leifer, flutist and bansuri player

The cabaret style concert will consist of two sets. *Lyon Leifer has pioneered both Indian classical and Western classical music, and has brought together an exciting ensemble for this performance that includes noted musicians Ron Dewar, tenor saxophone; Rob Clearfield, piano; Patrick Mulcahey, bass; Kalyan Pathak, drum set; Shankachur Lahiri, tabla and Shruti Joshi, tambura.  Each set is intended to go about 40 minutes.

Crown Hall at the Illinois Institute of Technology

The  Fulbright Association-Chicago Chapter is celebrating International Education Week with the collaboration of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT).

You are invited!

Local and international sustainable green architectural environments will be our central topic. Dr. Darsh Wasan, Vice-President of International Affairs at IIT, will introduce keynote speaker Donna Robertson, Dean of IIT’s College of Architecture,  whose talk is entitled “THE EMERGING DESIGN PRACTICE:TOMORROW’S TALENT, CLIENTS AND ISSUES”. Dean Robertson’s talk will provide  an overview of how attention to design excellence and innovative practices has contributed to Chicago’s renaissance as a progressive city focused on quality of life, sustainability and healthy environments for urban dwelling.  In the last decade Chicago has transformed whole neighborhoods, greened its urban space and places, and created unique environments that enhance the experience of residents and visitors.  Chicago has a very strong practice community of design professionals, civic leaders and government officials who work very hard on behalf of attention to design and making improvements where ever possible.  The talk will examine the Illinois Institute of Technology’s self-transformation through a campus master plan, the innovative new skyscrapers being built, the new ideas for infrastructure upgrades, and special new places such as Millennium Park and the Chicago Riverwalk.

The talk will also address progressive practices in architecture focused towards changes in the 21st century.  New technologies and communication media are transforming the professional mode of project execution.  This also is having an effect on education, and how students learn.  Useful if unusual alliances and a more community based design process will also be introduced.  New topics of research in the academy will have direct contributions to the practice of architecture and design, including sustainability in high-rise design and the science of neuroaesthetics.
New buildings, public places and interiors will be introduced, using the textbook of Chicago’s recent attention to design excellence in the built environment.

The luncheon will take place at the IIT’s Crown Hall (a Chicago landmark designed by Mies van der Rohe), located at 3360 S State St. in Chicago, from 11:30 till 2:30 p.m.

Juan José Herrera is an innovative trio in the genre of interpretation of Venezuelan instrumental music with piano, double bass, and cuatro (four string guitar.) Its members are dual professionals: engineers and musicians, living in worlds of both academia and folkloric music. Their music offers classical music interpreted with Venezuelan rhythms: Bach in joropo, Beethoven in waltz, and Mozart in merengue. These pieces amalgamate the immortality of great classics with the essence of Venezuelan music.

Over 55 Fulbright Association members and their guests gathered at the Fine Arts Building in downtown Chicago on Saturday, September 29th to welcome 92 visiting Fulbright Scholars, Students, and Foreign Language Teaching Assistants. Our welcome reception featured a presentation by David Swan, one of Chicago’s most renowned architects and architectural historians, and the author of “The Book of the Fine Arts Building”. We were honored that so many individuals from the International Consul Corps, the Chicago Sister Cities International Program, and the Illinois World Trade Center came out to join us in the open air of DLK’s superb 4th-floor Italianate courtyard.
