The Millennial Trains Project and Design+Us

Design + US is Meghan Lazier's project proposal for the inaugural Millennial Trains Project. She will use design thinking workshops to help local leaders solve problems while learning a new skill set of better brainstorming, designing with empathy and putting rapid prototyping into action if she raises $5,000 by June 30th.

Design + US is Meghan Lazier’s project proposal for the inaugural Millennial Trains Project. She will use design thinking workshops to help local leaders solve problems while learning a new skill set of better brainstorming, designing with empathy and putting rapid prototyping into action if she raises $5,000 by June 30th.

THOUGH FULBRIGHT SCHOLARS come from many different backgrounds and academic disciplines, one of the common takeaways from the experience is that the year is a time for both reflection and action. It’s a time to observe and to launch new ideas.

So, it is no surprise that during Patrick Dowd’s year as a Fulbright in India, where he helped co-lead a trip for young activists by train throughout India, has led to the launch of his latest venture, the Millennial Trains Project.

The Millennial Trains Project is a non-profit organization that empowers civic-minded Millennials here in the US to explore the country by train.  During the ten-day, cross-country journey, which stops in Chicago, Millennial participants will lead seminars and projects with local community members that benefit and inspire others.

Chicagoan and former Fulbright Scholar Meghan Lazier (Hong Kong 2007-2008) is vying for a place on the train. But in order to participate in the project, each participant must crowdfund $5,000 by raising money to support a project that create community impact and can be accomplished during the ten-day journey.

As a soon-to-be MFA student in design, Meghan Lazier knew that she wanted her project to help teach community leaders the transformative power of design thinking.  Design thinking is an approach that uses empathy, better brainstorming and rapid prototyping to come up with better ideas and solutions when trying to solve a problem.

As Lazier says, “By using design thinking – along with a mix of creativity and a dash of innovation – today’s leading companies have generated millions of dollars by thinking about their users and designing creative solutions. Simply put, companies that use design thinking win.  They win our trust, loyalty and ultimately, our dollars. When communities learn the power of design thinking – they’ll win too.  They’ll win by helping save lives by re-thinking emergency preparedness strategies, figure out how to stretch a small budget to house 50 more people each night at a homeless shelter or how to stop unwanted graffiti on a historical building.  No matter what problem a community is looking to face, using design thinking will generate more win-win solutions than ever before.  That’s because, design thinking beyond our comfort zones and knee-jerk reactions to problems.”

Lazier says that her experience as an Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Hong Kong and the opportunity she had to spend six weeks learning about design thinking from the co-founder of Stanford’s d.school make her well trained in how to deliver an impactful presentation and meaningful results.

To help Patrick and Meghan succeed in making the Millennial Trains Project possible, learn more and donate by July 15th!

More than 70 participants among Fulbright students, alumni and guests got together at 11 a.m. at the new Hellenic Museum site for a tour of the facility. The museum, whose mission is to showcase and celebrate the contributions of the Greek and Greek American communities, was inaugurated 16 months ago, in December of 2011.

The new museum (the original was founded in 1983) is hosted in a contemporary and beautiful 40,000 square-foot building that features a library, several exhibition halls, and archival research center, and oral history center and different classrooms. There is also a rooftop (that can be rented for events) that has a magnificent view of the Chicago skyline.

Every year in late April, the Chicago Chapter of the Fulbright Association and the Institute of International Education organize the Spring Farewell event in an ethnic neighborhood.

Certificates of completion are awarded to the Fulbright students who came to the Chicago area universities to pursue, generally, a master’s or PhD degrees. Last year, the Swedish neighborhood in Andersonville was chosen with a visit to the Swedish American Museum.

However, the Fulbright scholars, who generally are professors and researchers, are also invited to share the accomplishment of the students.

After the tour, a delicious Greek buffet was offered at the Parthenon Restaurant, right across from the Hellenic Museum where everybody had a chance to share moments of conviviality, celebrating the Fulbright spirit.

“We are confronting new challenges and the Fulbright Association is ready to face them,” Stephen Reilly, Executive Director of the Fulbright Association said. Reilly, who was appointed as executive director this past January said he is very interested in adding more value to the services that the association provides to their members.

But he is also mindful that this is a joint effort by all chapter leaders and alumni.

Chicago Chapter donates books to Ghana and Moldova

Books were collected from Skokie Public Library and Niles Township Library to be donated to Ghana and Moldova.

Books were collected from Skokie Public Library and Niles Township Library to be donated to Ghana and Moldova.

By Elio Leturia—THE BOOK PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM, an ongoing project of the Chicago Chapter of the Fulbright Association, recently donated 18 boxes of books collected over the past months from different libraries around Chicago.

So far, since the beginning of this program in 2007, books have arrived in Panama, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt and Botswana.

Ana Gil-García

Ana Gil-García

On February 8, 2012, eight boxes of books were donated to schools in Ghana through the organization Books4cause*. Last Friday February 15, Romina Hendrzak from the organization Moldova AID*, received ten boxes to be sent to Moldova schools.

Ana Gil-García and Heidi Rockwell, board members of the Chicago Chapter of the Fulbright Association have been working together on these latest donations. “The Book Partnership is a non-stop flight of the Chicago Chapter that connects fellow Fulbrighters around the world through books. In spite of the recent obstacles of shipment and storage, we were able to ship the books through non-for-profit organizations that operate locally and have similar missions as our project,” Gil-García said.

Heidi Rockwell

Heidi Rockwell

For this donation Rockwell collected books from Skokie Public Library and Niles Township Library, and the Chicago Chapter is getting ready to start a book drive not only in CPS schools and Chicago universities, but in other suburban towns. “There was a ‘twist’ from the original project as we have incorporated non-for-profit institutions to help us deliver the books. But, the goal and purposes are preserved: helping children around the globe with books to read. The Chapter is working to refine the process so that we can still work with our fellow Fulbright international association members to keep the sense of partnership,” Gil-García added.

*Books4cause is a non-profit located in Skokie that runs book drives on campuses across the U.S. and accepts book donations in Chicago. They accept any cd, DVD and book in good condition and ship them to Ghana in Africa. For more information about the program go to http://www.books4cause.com.
*Moldova AID is a non-profit organization that primarily supports informational and educational programs to the Republic of Moldova. For more information visit www.moldovaaid.wordpress.com. Moldova AID launched a new project called A Book Share. The objective of the project is to expand access to academic books to encourage research and development in various fields of science and technology in the Republic of Moldova, and to promote English as a universal platform for accessing information.

Among the guests there were Lin Chen, a Fulbright scholar from Shanghai, China, who is doing research at the University of Chicago in the Department of Comparative Literature, and Tatiana Venediktova from Moscow, Russia, who is a Literature and Cultural Studies scholar at the same university in the Department of English. Lin Chen came with her son Jingli Cheng and Venediktova brought her husband Evgeniy Dugin, who is a professor at the Academy for Advanced Studies in Journalism in Moscow.

This was truly an international dinner. Among the dishes shared were a Venezuelan chicken and cassava soup, a Peruvian Ají de Gallina, and a “quesillo” (Venezuelan flan.) To wash everything down everybody enjoyed an authentic Spanish Sangría, and with dessert, Armenian Cognac and Italian Limoncello.
