Severe weather no match for International Spirit during 2013 International Education Week

International Fulbrighters gathered to celebrate International Education Week

In spite of severe rain, wind and hail, international Fulbrighters gathered to celebrate International Education Week.

By Mary Mares-Awe—ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 17, 2013,  the Chicago chapter of the Fulbright Association celebrated International Education Week (IEW), with an event focusing on Chicago’s immigrant history. The international education week was started about ten years ago as a joint venture between the US Dept. of State and the US Dept. of Education. The aim is to encourage organizations and education institutions to organize events that highlight the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

Jane Addams

Jane Addams

The Chapter chose to organize an event focusing on the history of Chicago’s immigrants around the turn of the last century. We planned a tour of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum. Jane Addams, a social worker, was instrumental in helping newly arrived immigrants in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s start a new life in Chicago. Through her Hull-House settlement, she provided job training, child care for working mothers, hot meals and other services to immigrant families. Jane Addams was also the first woman to win a Nobel Peace prize for her work.

An area called Little Italy, adjacent to Hull-House, is the home of Chicago’s Italian immigrant community and today continues to thrive with authentic Italian restaurants and the Italian language is still spoken throughout the neighborhood. Our event was comprised of a tour of the Hull-House museum starting at noon, followed by a luncheon at Pompei, an Italian restaurant in Little Italy.

The day started out fine, but by late morning Chicago weather forecasters were calling for bad weather including multiple tornado warnings.

Those of us on the board who participated in the event didn’t find out until after our arrival at the museum around 11:30am, that the Hull-House was closed due to the weather. The chapter’s president Ron Harvey made a decision to direct participants to the restaurant for the lunch gathering. However, the severe weather had begun with rain and high winds.

In a great show of international spirit and cooperation, those driving (including members of the Consular Corps) immediately offered to give rides to the restaurant for those who walked or had taken public transportation. By the time the worst weather was coming down, most attendees were dry and safe at Pompei. Thank you to everyone for your excellent teamwork!

More than 60 participants turned out for the event.

Our lunch was scheduled for 2 pm. Accommodating a large crowd is not an easy task for any restaurant, but when I called Carmela, one of the managers at Pompei, and explained the museum tour cancellation and the weather situation,  to my great relief she replied “No problem, Mary, of course you can bring everyone now. Come on in.  I’ll let the staff know.”

As everyone started heading for the restaurant about four blocks away, the weather quickly became worse. Five international students from various countries including South Africa, Chile and Ecuador piled into my car and off we went. By now the rain was so heavy that it was difficult to see the road. But, we safely made it along with great laughter and positive energy that was contagious.

At the restaurant, attendees stared to talk to each other —and in the true Fulbright spirit— new relations and connections started to form with ease. Participants from more than 20 countries as diverse as Estonia, Portugal, and Indonesia sat together enjoying pizza, salads and dessert.  We were also honored with the attendance of Consul Generals from Taiwan, and Pakistan.

By early afternoon (as strong winds, hail and rain raged outside) inside the spirit of Fulbright was shining its rays of friendship, good vibes and positive energy. Thanks to everyone for participating in the event and for letting the true Fulbright spirit shine through. Special thanks to Ron for his leadership and for everyone else for participating.

By Cristina Sisson—ON SEPTEMBER 28th, 2013, the Chicago Chapter of the Fulbright Association and the Institute of International Education (IIE) kicked off the 2013 academic year with a Fall Welcome in the heart of Chicago’s Pilsen Historic District.

Over eighty visiting Fulbright scholars and students from around the world and twenty Chicago-area alumni gathered on a sunny fall day for an informal lunch  at Simone’s, a unique local bar, located on Chicago’s near south side.  After brief introductions and invitations to participate in future Chicago Chapter events, guests competed against each other to complete a Chicago facts scavenger hunt.

Fulbright Chicago board member opens a solo photographic exhibit

Regina Mamou_photo

THIS FRIDAY OCTOBER 11, 2013, Fulbright Association Chicago Chapter board member Regina Mamou will be opening her photographic solo exhibit, Unfortunately, It Was Paradise.

The opening reception will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the City Gallery in the Historic Water Tower, 806 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60611.

This solo exhibition, curated by DCASE showcases the latest photo work from Mamou. According to Karsten Lund, Curatorial Assistant at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago,“The series resembles a straightforward historical study at first, but it whittles away at its own self-assurances, giving way to a more open-ended investigation, an inquisitive tangle of ruminative questions. The photographs employ observational methods and an unembellished style like we’ve come to associate with documentary photography, but their primary aim isn’t to convey historical information. If it’s history we’re after, the past appears unexplained, unannotated, in need of deciphering.”

Lund continues, “Mamou approaches her subjects obliquely, interested more in the ambiguous overlay of past and present in these places, the aesthetics of the communities coded into the landscape, and the ways visual evidence requires interpretation. Her photographs are amalgams of what took place at these sites in the mid-19th century, what she found when she visited recently, and her subjective choices of what to record.”

Unfortunately, It Was Paradise will remain open until January 19, 2014.

Regina Mamou_mugRegina Mamou is a Chicago-based visual artist working at the intersection of photography, installation, and research practices. In 2009 she received a 15-month Fulbright Fellowship to Jordan to explore navigational methods and memory in Amman. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally. “WELCOME TO THE MOST AMERICAN of the American cities,” said Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel at the MOOCs panel discussion event that took place at the University of Chicago Hyde Park campus on Monday May 7, 2013.

The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) is the organism that oversees all the Fulbright programs in the world, and meets four times a year. For the first time, this board met in Chicago, May 6-8.

In order to reach out to the Fulbright community, the Department of State worked closely with the Chicago Chapter of the Fulbright Association to organize a series of activities while the Fulbright Board was in town. Several events took place at the Quadrangle Club of the University of Chicago.

More than 70 participants among Fulbright students, alumni and guests got together at 11 a.m. at the new Hellenic Museum site for a tour of the facility. The museum, whose mission is to showcase and celebrate the contributions of the Greek and Greek American communities, was inaugurated 16 months ago, in December of 2011.

The new museum (the original was founded in 1983) is hosted in a contemporary and beautiful 40,000 square-foot building that features a library, several exhibition halls, and archival research center, and oral history center and different classrooms. There is also a rooftop (that can be rented for events) that has a magnificent view of the Chicago skyline.

Certificates of completion are awarded to the Fulbright students who came to the Chicago area universities to pursue, generally, a master’s or PhD degrees. Last year, the Swedish neighborhood in Andersonville was chosen with a visit to the Swedish American Museum.

However, the Fulbright scholars, who generally are professors and researchers, are also invited to share the accomplishment of the students.

After the tour, a delicious Greek buffet was offered at the Parthenon Restaurant, right across from the Hellenic Museum where everybody had a chance to share moments of conviviality, celebrating the Fulbright spirit.
