Welcome Fulbrighters!

Close to 50 Fulbright students from different countries of the world were welcome by past Fulbright recipients and members of the board of the Chicago Chapter of the Fulbright Association on Saturday October 23, 2010 at the International House of the University of Chicago in Hyde Park.

Besides food, beverages and animated conversation, we all had the chance to enjoy the presentation of storyteller Beth Horner, who entertained the audience with interesting stories and tales from Chicago and other parts of the world. Halloween was a good reason for her to share with us some spooky, and in some cases, hilarious stories.

A scene of hospitality

Everybody happy after having "Coquito" custard for dessert

Among the several groups of Fulbright students who were invited to share a night of hospitality on Friday March 12, there was one that spent several hours with great food and fun at the house of Dr. Ana Gil-García. Students were picked up at the Palmer House, transported via the “L” to Dr. Gil-García’s home where her daughter Ana Bonnie greeted all with a delicious meal. At that moment, Dr. Gil García’s was in Central America, where she had been invited by the State Department to offer presentations on education in several institutions of Guatemala and Belize. She didn’t want to cancel the event since she hosts this special night with students every year.

The guests came from all continents: Rita Tomás (Portugal,) Sanae Nakatani (Japan,) Kristal Pouching (Trinidad & Tobago,) Alberto Cerda (Chile,) Sylvie Schwarzwälder (Germany,) Hatem Manasrah (Palestine,) Fariz Mammadov (Azerbaijan,) Telma Romao (Mozambique,) Franz Hensel (Colombia) and Arturo Díaz Ramos (Spain.)

Let’s show our hospitality!

The Palmer House Hilton Hotel

As part of the Chicago Fulbright Enrichment Seminar on March 11-14, 2010 the home hospitality evening will be held on Friday, March 12, 2010The home hospitality evening is consistently rated by the Fulbrighters as a highlight of the seminar, and we rely on the generous support of hosts to make it happen.

We invite you to open your home to two or more Fulbrighters for dinner and a short visit on March 12.  As an alternative, you may host Fulbrighters at a local restaurant. You have preferences for hosting Fulbrighters of particular cultural backgrounds or fields of study. Your flexibility and generosity are greatly appreciated.

We have a good number of Muslim students from around the world (Africa, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia) who may require a Halal dinner. In general, a vegetarian meal or a meal with fish is considered Halal.

The seminar will be held at the Palmer House Hilton hotel, 17 East Monroe Street in Chicago. We ask that you provide transportation for your guests unless you are easily accessible via public transportation. If you are accessible via CTA trains and/or buses, we will work with you to determine the best route from the hotel. If you are not accessible via CTA, we highly encourage you to pick up your guests at the hotel or provide transportation between your home and the CTA station nearest to your home.

If anyone is interested, please contact Joanne Forster at jforster@iie.org or 312-346-0026, ext. 205.
