Fulbrighters Say Hej Då

Fulbright students and scholars during the Spring Farewell Lunch at Reza’s Restaurant in the Andersonville area of Chicago

By Thomas Ahleman — THIS PAST SATURDAY, APRIL 28TH 2012, the Chicago Chapter of the Fulbright Association and the Institute of International Education IIE, said congratulations and farewell to several of the visiting Fulbright students and scholars who are completing their studies in the area or finishing with their research or teaching.

The chapter held the annual farewell luncheon event at the Swedish American Museum and Reza’s Restaurant, both in the Andersonville neighborhood.

The Swedish American Museum tour was divided in two groups. Jessie Aucoin, Education Director of the museum, offering a tour on the second floor.

Thirty-seven friends of the Fulbright program were on hand for a tour of the museum, which included a photography and painting exhibit, “Images of Sweden” as well as the permanent exhibition on Swedish emigration to the U.S.

Board members Bruni Hirsch and Kari Burnett during the farewell lunch

Those present included alumni, members of the Fulbright Association board, Fulbrighters, family members as well as the Consul General of Pakistan, Mr. Zaheer Pervaiz Khan and his wife.

The museum visit also included a stop at the Brunk Children’s Museum of Immigration located on the third floor of the museum where the younger (and a few not-so young) guests enjoyed playing on a miniature Swedish stuga (farm,) a miniature ocean liner like the ones that ferried Swedes to the U.S…. and of course on the Viking ship.

Learning about so many people saying goodbye to friends and family to pursue their dreams was a particularly poignant setting for our farewell event.

Following the visit to the museum, everyone enjoyed the delicious Persian buffet at Reza’s Restaurant, where Chapter president Elio Leturia presented certificates to those visiting Fulbrighters who are concluding their studies this spring.

Leturia also reminisced about the chapter’s robust program of events over the past year that included the Fall Welcome, Noche Bohemia, International Education Week, Winter Holidays, International Women’s Day and the Rush Hospital Architectural Tour. He also wished our esteemed guests good luck on their journeys home.

At this meeting, that took place on March 26, 2012, participated Ahmed Salama, FLTA alumnus and leader of the Teachers’ Circle for 2012; Sahar Ramadan, FLTA alumna and active member of the Teachers’ Circle and Dr. Abdel Moneim, Professor at the Department of English of Menoufia University. We also had Dr. Ossama Madany, Chairman of the English Language Department at Menoufia University, who joined the discussion, via Skype.

The book donation will be, at this time, to Menoufia University. This institution is one of the largest universities in Egypt, which has two campuses: Shibim El Kom, located 47 miles from Cairo and Sadat City, 60 miles from Cairo.

What a Rush! Our Architectural Tour and American Health Care System presentation were a success

The impressive Rush Tower

APPROXIMATELY 80 PEOPLE attended a presentation on the American Health Care System by Peter W. Butler, President and Chief Operating Officer of Rush University Medical Center, at the March 10th event of the Chicago chapter.

His talk carried even more meaning due to its setting—the new state of the art, fourteen-story Rush Tower, the latest addition to Rush Hospital’s campus.

Mr. Butler opened his remarks with the statement that “We like health care in America,” and that was proven true by the statistics he showed that underscore the complexity of this issue in American society.

Mr. Peter W. Butler, President and Chief Operating Officer of Rush University Medical Center during his presentation

Each patient room has a window with an extraordinary view of the city

Topics covered by him were population trends, distribution of insurance coverage by state, the length of hospital stays, types of hospitals, an international comparison of spending on health care, and health care reform.

A possible caveat for the Midwesterners in the audience is to stay healthy because the Northeast region of the U.S. has many more doctors than the Midwest!

The Consul Generals posted in Chicago who were present were appreciative of a chance to hear about our health care system by a hospital administrator and to view such an architecturally stunning example of a recently completed hospital.

Mr. Butler gave his presentation on the American Health Care System

Following the presentation, a Question and Answer session was held which allowed Mr. Butler an opportunity to further explain the many challenges that health care systems face in our country.

A tour of portions of the new tower ensued, led by staff members of the medical and nursing faculty—expert guides.

Following the presentation, the audience was divided in groups for the architectural tour. The guides were, from right to left (first row,) Dr. Annabelle Volgman, Dr. Lynne T. Braun, Dr. Susanna Chubinskaya and Ms. Janet Myers

Tour goers were impressed by the attention to detail that was designed into the new facility with the outcome of an increase in quality patient care and comfort.  Whether it was the unique butterfly-shaped floor wings, the high-tech touch in patient rooms, the play space for visiting children, or the indoor-outdoor atrium in the entrance pavilion, attendees felt that Rush care givers have hit the mark in their new structure’s layout and features. Not to be overlooked is the eastward view of Chicago from the hospital’s outdoor terraces—a special treat for patients, visitors, and staff.

And all this started with a tasty breakfast, with plenty of fruit, coffee, orange juice, bagels and an array of pastries.

Mr. Peter W. Butler, President and Chief Operating Officer of Rush University Medical Center, Dr. Linda Gruber, board member of the Chicago Chapter and Elio Leturia, President of the Chicago Chapter of the Fulbright Association

The event was carefully organized by a committee led by Dr. Linda Gruber, with the assistance of Bruni Hirsch and Jason Romano, all board members of the Chicago Chapter of the Fulbright Association, and with the extraordinary support of Dr. Lynne T. Braun and Janet Myers from Rush Hospital.

A special operating room where physicians of different specialties can work together at the same time, while up to 15 students can observe the procedures.

Fourteenth floor of the new Rush Hospital Tower. The design allows nurses to be very close to patients' rooms.

Ample patient room features specially designed furniture for family members to spend the night, flat television, security box, enough storage room and a bathroom able to accommodate people in wheelchairs, among other features.

Gorgeous atrium allows the light to come into the different floors of the tower.

The unique butterfly shaped design allows every patient room to have a window and lots of light. The building also has beautiful outdoor terraces, quiet open areas and spaces for children.

(Front from left) Elisa Uusimaeki, Mirana Razafindramboa, Agnes Brugger (Stephen's wife); (Rear from left) Achille Mutombo, Stephen Hill, Hosni Zobai and Arnaud Dakpogan got to know each other during the dinner hospitality program.

EVERY YEAR, AS PART OF the Fulbright Enrichment program organized by IIE (Institute of International Education,) the Fulbright alumni are asked to open their homes for a hospitality dinner. This casual event allows Fulbrighters studying around the United States to get to know one another as well as our marvelous city.

For Fulbright Association-Chicago Chapter board member Stephen Hill, this is the fifth time he and his family host international Fulbrighters, and as he says “each time has been very rewarding.”

Hosni Zobai, from Israel, ready for a sip of red wine.

This year they were joined by Achille Mutombo (DRC; Law Mich State), Mirana Razafindramboa (Madagascar; Travel/Tourism RIT), Elisa Uusimaeki (Finland; Theology Yale), Arnaud Dakpogan (Benin; Economics Williams) and Hosni Zoabi (Israel; Law Geo. Washington).  They made their way up the Red line to the Howard street station where they were picked up.  After enjoying drinks a meal followed which flew a steady stream of questions and observations about their various countries and experiences.  As several of them were either from or had lived in Africa, the conversations frequently returned to issues of governance, patronage, and the high rate of economic growth found in some sub-Saharan countries.  As a good welcoming American the meal was finished, naturally, with apple pie!
