EVERY YEAR, AS PART OF the Fulbright Enrichment program organized by IIE (Institute of International Education,) the Fulbright alumni are asked to open their homes for a hospitality dinner. This casual event allows Fulbrighters studying around the United States to get to know one another as well as our marvelous city.

For Fulbright Association-Chicago Chapter board member Stephen Hill, this is the fifth time he and his family host international Fulbrighters, and as he says “each time has been very rewarding.”

Hosni Zobai, from Israel, ready for a sip of red wine.

This year they were joined by Achille Mutombo (DRC; Law Mich State), Mirana Razafindramboa (Madagascar; Travel/Tourism RIT), Elisa Uusimaeki (Finland; Theology Yale), Arnaud Dakpogan (Benin; Economics Williams) and Hosni Zoabi (Israel; Law Geo. Washington).  They made their way up the Red line to the Howard street station where they were picked up.  After enjoying drinks a meal followed which flew a steady stream of questions and observations about their various countries and experiences.  As several of them were either from or had lived in Africa, the conversations frequently returned to issues of governance, patronage, and the high rate of economic growth found in some sub-Saharan countries.  As a good welcoming American the meal was finished, naturally, with apple pie! Dolores Rinke gave presentation on Fulbright programs at Purdue University Calumet

Dr. Dolores Rinke talking to students and faculty at Purdue University Calumet

AS PART OF THE INTERNATIONAL Education Week activities, on November 16th, 2011, Dr. Dolores Rinke addressed students and faculty members at Purdue University Calumet, to inform them of the various opportunities offered by the Fulbright Programs.  One of this university strategic goals  is to increase cultural diversity on the campus. Dr. Rinke also talked about her personal experience as a Fulbright Scholar in Hungary in 1994 teaching accounting consistent with the new economic goals of the country that had made the transition from a command economy to a capitalistic one.

A few years later, she returned to Hungary as a Senior Specialist to help the country prepare for entrance into the European Union.  This semester, she has another Fulbright Senior Specialist grant to work with Hacettepe University in Turkey, teaching them International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and corporate governance.

As most Fulbright alumni will agree, the Fulbright experience has been a life altering experience.  In addition to working with the Chicago Chapter, she has also served as Board member and Treasurer for the National Board for six years.

Professor Rinke teaches International and Financial Accounting at Purdue University Calumet where she has been teaching since 1987.  This summer, she plans to take students on an International Accounting Experience to London and Paris where they will learn about IFRS and how they are established and practiced.  More than 100 countries, including all the countries of the European Union, have adopted IFRS.  The U.S. is currently working on a convergence project to converge U.S. accounting principles with IFRS.

*Aphrodite Floros Sarelas, an early Fulbrighter to Greece. A Chicagoan dedicated to interacting with and nurturing Fulbrighters in the Chicagoland community, Dee was a person remembered for her wit, empathy, and vivacity in bringing people across cultures together. Her educational background and professional experiences in the field of Social Work prepared her well for contributions to our chapter and beyond—as an administrator for the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army Training College, as a liaison at White House conferences, as a special consultant to Voice of America, and as editor of Social Welfare in Underdeveloped Countries (United Nations publication). For the foregoing reasons, the Dee Sarelas Fulbright Service Award has been established in her memory.
